According to reports, a recording believed to be of Anwar al-Awlaki was posted to jihadist forums Sunday, February 13. In the recording, al-Awlaki criticizes the Yemeni government for cooperating with the United States and expresses support for jailed Yemeni journalist Abdulelah Hider Shaea, who was recently convicted and jailed for supporting al Qaeda.

According to Reuters, al-Awlaki says, “The free-spirited journalist Abdulelah Haidar Shai was imprisoned because he exposed American crimes in Yemen…Abdulelah was doing his journalistic duty and every journalist …, his tribe and all Yemenis should carry out their duty to support him.”

Relatedly, David Rothkopf writes the following in Foreign Affairs magazine, directed at al-Awlaki:

The real work for Islamic leaders like yourself is fixing the Islamic world first-because the only places where there is less tolerance and where Islamic groups are more viciously targeted is in the Middle East. And the real need of the people for whom you are allegedly fighting is for real opportunity, education, economic growth and responsive, representative government at home.
