Ultrasecret satellite spy shop NRO turns 50 – AP

On September 16, 2011, the Associated Press reported that the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) turned 50 years old. Founded during the Cold War, the NRO is responsible for satellites used in the intelligence community.

Today, NRO spy satellites target new enemies ranging from al-Qaida to North Korea. More recently, data collected through these satellites assisted the Navy Seals during their raid against Osama bin Laden and provided assistance to NATO and rebel forces in Libya.
