Karzai Accuses U.S. of Violating Detainee Pact

Afghanistan’s President, Hamid Karzai, has accused the United States of violating a detainee pact by failing to turn over more than 70 Afghans who are being held by U.S. forces despite their ordered release by Afghan courts, according to The Washington Times.

The Times reports that President Karzai’s statement urges Afghan officials to “push for taking over all responsibility at the Parwan detention center at the Bagram Air Field, the main U.S. base in eastern Afghanistan,” and the only confirmed detention center for Afghan prisoners.

The article goes on to state that the accusations have come amidst negotiations for a bilateral security agreement between the two nations that will help to guide U.S. military presence in Afghanistan after the 2014 withdrawal of U.S. troops.
