United States to Reimburse Pakistani Government $688 Million

The New York Times reports that the Pentagon has quietly informed the Congress of its intent to reimburse Pakistan for the cost of stationing approximately 140,000 troops on the Pakistani border with Afghanistan—a move that will reportedly cost the United States $688 million.

According to the article, President Obama is a leading proponent of this decision, which has been cited as an effort to normalize the Pakistani military. The United States also provides approximately $2 billion annually to Pakistan for security assistance, The Times reports.
